Hawkesbury cold snap sees mercury plunge

FEELING a little on the frosty side? It’s no wonder Hawkesbury residents have been rugging up in their winter attire earlier than usual this year – the district has just experienced its coldest April in 13 years.

Online weather service provider weather-zone.com.au advised the day-time temperature in Richmond was 21 degrees, three below the April average of 24 degrees.

The coldest day last month was Monday, April 28, when the barometer recorded a temperature of 17 degrees, seven below the average, and less than a degree higher than the lowest recorded April temperature (between 1995 and 2008) of 16.4 degrees in 1998.

Proving that April can be a turbulent weather month, the highest recorded April temperature of 34 degrees also fell in 1998, merely 15 days after recording its lowest temperature.

April mornings have also been cooler than expected, with the mercury dropping to a shivering two degrees last Wednesday, only slightly warmer than the lowest recorded temperature of -0.4 degrees in 2006.

Despite the cold weather, a few balmy autumn days were had, with the top temperature reaching 29.2 at the beginning of the month.

Richmond also experienced a few rainy days during April, recording a fall of 12.2mm on Thursday, April 10, 4.8mm on April 14, and a drizzling week from Monday 21 to Friday 25 saw 21.4mm fall over the district.

I commiserate with Hawkesbury residents on their chilly April. Wish it was as chilly as that here in Yorkshire. Might be able to take a sweater off!

Oops! The last link I sent only goes up to 1994. The current data, which can be added to the previous page and averaged will give the full term results to date. Here is the current data site - http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_067105.shtm l
