Relay the symbol of survival

COME and celebrate life, courage and love at this year’s Relay for Life at Hawkesbury Showground next week.

On Saturday and Sunday, May 31-June 1, the showground will become a blend of carnival and memorial, as it raises funds for cancer research and remembers those who have lost a battle with cancer. Not only will participants do laps around the arena to raise money, but there will be a whole program of entertainment.

Teams set up their own tents or base camps, which are always great for a visit, Rotary will be cooking up delicious hot sausage sandwiches and bacon and egg rolls, and a coffee cart will be open all night providing cappuccinos to those stalwarts walking around the track in the early morning hours of Sunday.

Take part in the Rotary Games and dance or listen to local acts who will provide entertainment throughout the day.

The RAAF will provide an obstacle course for participants to try their hand at, and RAAF dogs will provide an attack demonstration.

The RAAF firies will show off their massive firetruck designed for aeroplane fires and Kozi and Pinky the clowns will make a poodle for you out of balloons and paint your face to look like any character you fancy.

A big fireworks display will be a highlight this year, celebrating half a decade since the start of Relay for Life and the generosity of the Hawkesbury community in raising funds for the cause.

The fireworks will follow the HOPE ceremony where candles are lit for those to be remembered, and after that there will be a talent quest – Relay Idol.

A special invitation is extended to cancer survivors to come to the opening ceremony on Saturday morning, May 31 at 9.30am and walk the first lap of the relay, called the Survivors’ Lap, at 10am. This is followed by everyone present, to honour and remember those who have passed on, and to give strength and encouragement to those currently on a cancer journey.
