GIRL power is in full force at the Hawkesbury BMX Club at McGraths Hill.
The final round of the NSW BMX Regional series has just wrapped up and three of the club’s members have taken out the title in their age group.
Abbey Vahtrik of Windsor, 10, Georgia Barnes of Oakville, 11 and Danielle Beecroft of Londonderry, 13 are proud champions.
All three girls went into the last round of the series at Manly BMX track in commanding positions and looked set to claim ultimate victory.
In addition to their wins, all girls have achieved top placings at last month’s Australian BMX Championships in Adelaide. Abbey and Georgia claimed sixth spot and Danielle scored eighth. All girls are thrilled with their achievements and they have qualified for the state titles in October.
They all hope to move onto the Australian titles, and then qualify for the World BMX Championships next year in Adelaide.
Georgia’s dad, Brett, said Georgia simply can’t get enough of racing.
“She used to play netball and then decided to give BMX a go and she just loves it,” he said. “She is stoked with her win at the state regionals.”
Danielle’s dad, Darren, couldn’t be prouder of his daughter.
“She has been going so well,” he said. “This is her third state regional title. She is a real tomboy she loves to race. She rode motorbikes at 4 and when she started racing BMX, she adapted to it really well.”
Danielle also races four-cross (mountain bike riding) and downhill. At 12, she won the under-19s downhill Australian title and came second in a national pro-women’s four-cross (elite) championship.
Abbey, who also loves to dance, has been racing for two years. Mum Vicki said she never thought her daughter would be “into BMX.”
“She watched my son race and she wanted to do it. The first race she competed in, she won,” she said.
