Play cricket in England

EVER dreamt of playing cricket overseas, or sharing a net session with the all-conquering Australian team?

Eleven Hawkesbury cricketers aged 13 to 17 will live out that very dream in July 2009 as they head to England on an 18-day cricket tour, taking in the sights of the UK while playing 10 games against local school teams.

The tour has been organised by Hawkesbury Cricket, which originally had enough interested players to field two teams, but is now struggling to make up one.

Tour secretary Carole Hately said due to some last minute dropouts, the tour needs three more players in order to go ahead.

“We need to find three more players aged 15 to 17 who want to join us on the trip of a lifetime,” she said.

“They don’t have to be representative players, ability isn’t important, the only criteria is a love of cricket.”

The tour company has given Hawkesbury Cricket six weeks to finalise the team and the number of travellers accompanying it.

Ms Hately is keen to give Hawkesbury kids the chance to tour, but said if no one comes forward, she’ll open it to players from other areas such as Blacktown or Penrith.

“We need three firm yes’s in the next three weeks,” she said.

The trip is also open to families, with 19 parents already signed on.

“We have our own bus and tour guide for the entire 18-day trip, so there will be plenty for the adults to do while the kids play.”

Highlights include a day at the Ashes Test in Cardiff, a tour of Manchester United’s facilities at Old Trafford, and even a net session with the Australian team.

The trip will cost approximately $4600 for kids, and $5400 for adults, however, Mrs Hately said parents were not required to travel with their children.
