Hawks blas whales in bonus point start

HAWKESBURY kicked off the Sydney Cricket Association season with a dominant performance to destroy last year’s wooden spooner Mosman by six wickets at Allan Border Oval on Saturday.

The Hawks earned a bonus point with an outstanding bowling display in the one day match after Mosman elected to take first use of a new pitch, a decision that backfired when opening bowlers Shane Mott and Chuck Matthews each claimed an early wicket to have the Whales reeling at 2/4.

A 47-run partnership from Naughton and Jason Vero got the home team back on track before debutant Greg Lewis combined with wicketkeeper Sean Clarence to run Naughton out, and when Stephen O’Keefe removed Canadian World Cup star John Davison (8), it was 4/63 and Hawkesbury was well on top.

O’Keefe bowled brilliantly as he carried on his good form from last week’s NSW trial matches to take 1/20 from 10 before Justin Nelson bowled Vero with a slower ball for 34 and O’Keefe’s fellow spinners Anthony Kershler (3/23 from eight) and Scott Henry (1/11 from four overs) put paid to the tail to rip them out for 134.

Hawkesbury set off after the bonus point from the outset and Clarence was in great touch in getting to 21 before a freakish one handed catch ended what could have been a memorable knock and when Peter Forrest fell to a mistimed cut for just seven the Hawks were 2/48 and Mosman had some hope.

However, Lewis (30) negotiated the difficult wicket and added 53 with O’Keefe (37) for the third wicket before the Henry brothers saw their team home for the bonus point with two balls to spare.

The Hawks play host to Fairfield-Liverpool this Saturday and Monday in a long weekend treat for cricket fans.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
