HAWKESBURY Baseball Club had plenty to celebrate after winning the SMBL Masters Competition with its first team ever entered.
The SMBL Masters Competition has been running for four years and for the first time Hawkesbury Baseball Club entered a team.
Hawkesbury played Rouse Hill on the first day and had a win but not before Rouse Hill had taken the lead in the top of the last inning. Hawkesbury was at the top of its line-up and good batting by all players and big hits by John Sheffield, Damien Tomlinson and Adam Stephenson scored the three runs needed for a win.
The second game resulted in another very close game with Hawkesbury defeating Eagles 9-8. All players performed well with some great play in all fielding positions, particularly Debbie Upton at second base and Robin Fester at first base.
The playoff games saw Adam Stephenson take some miraculous diving catches at centrefield and Hawkesbury again won a very tight game against an unlucky Eagles 6-5.The final saw Hawkesbury play Rouse Hill after they had come from six runs down in the last inning to cause an upset against Kellyville.
Hawkesbury won the match after great pitching from Rick Upton and Damien Tomlinson and big hits from most Hawkesbury players including Frank Farrugia, Lars Kopplehuber, Rod Tuckwell and Paul Dodds.
Hawkesbury had a double celebration this week with five of the clubs junior players in the Hills North team that was winning a game in Queensland at about the same time that afternoon to become part of Australia’s first Little League Champions. Those junior players are Matthew Henessey, Cameron Power, Jordan Wood and Isaac Whatson. Hills North team will now go to Hong Kong to represent Australia in the Asian region championships.
