AFTER 2430 games of netball, the 2008 Netball NSW State Championships are officially over for another year.
With heavy rainfall threatening to cause havoc in the lead-up, the championship was smooth sailing, as 135 teams took to the court in a fiercely contested three days of netball action at Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association at Kellyville.
Hawkesbury’s netball association sent a lone team to the championship which scored a commendable 287 goals with the 17 and Under championship division team going on to win six games to finish in 17th position.
Netball NSW president, Wendy Archer AM, summed up the success and camaraderie exhibited throughout the series.
“This event is about more than just netball, it is about creating memories and showing that netball can be played and enjoyed by all ages,” Ms Archer said.
“At the barbecue, together we have enjoyed more than 2000 eggs, 1200 sausages, 20kgs of roast beef, 125kg of bacon and 1350 bottles of drink.
“So we know that the spectators consisting of mums, dads, and grandparents have all enjoyed three days of solid netball.”
At the conclusion of the State Championship, a merit squad of twelve players were selected from the Open, Open Minor and Over 35 divisions which included Keiran Haakstad and Ashli Ledbrook from Penrith and Alana Yoemans of Baulkham Hills.
